What Does Your Business Do?:
Honor Movers is a fully licensed and insured complete residential and commercial relocation company serving New England, New York and New Jersey. The Honor Movers team can provide a basic move which includes moving your possessions from one location to another, or, packing, moving and unpacking all your possessions. The Honor Movers team understands that most small businesses cannot close their doors for a day or two to relocate so Honor Movers has flexible hours to provide a seamless transition.
What Inspired You to Start Your Business?:
I reached the point in my career where I could retire as a CT State Trooper, I wanted to start my own business. After many long months of due diligence I saw a need for a residential and commercial moving company in the area to fill a large void left when other companies closed. The skills I have learned in the US Army, as well as the State Police, and the desire to continue to serve the citizens of Connecticut and surrounding areas allowed me to open the doors of Honor Movers.
Before Coming to the CTSBDC, What Were Your Primary Challenges and/or Needs?:
I was in the process of applying for a bank loan to purchase an existing moving company and was struggling with the business plan and the financial forecast of the business when I was introduced to Business Advisor Matt Nemeth. I was not sure where to start and how to get all the pieces lined up without spinning my wheels and failing to hard. I also was not sure how, or what , I should make a priority and what should be accomplished first to get the ball rolling.
How Has the CTSBDC Helped You Overcome Your Challenges?:
Matt Nemeth was with me during the hard times of attempting to purchase an existing business and guided me me through the steps I needed to take. When the initial deal of purchasing the existing business fell through Matt was instrumental in guiding and convincing me that I could? tart my own moving company. With Matt’s assistance, I was in fact able to start and grow Honor Movers. The service and counseling Matt provided were spot on and very professional. Matt took the time to teach me the things I needed to know to start and grow my business. There is no doubt that without Matt and the CTSBDC I would not be where I am today with my company.
What Have You Learned/Changed Since Working with the CTSBDC?:
Probably the most important thing I have learned while working with the CTSBDC is that a regular person without a lot of capital can start and be successful in their own small business. I changed the financial aspect and outlook for Honor Movers by realizing that I need to have financial? goals that are real and attainable while still reaching for the stars.
How is Your Business Doing Now? What Does Your Future Look Like?:
Honor Movers is doing well. I just hired my first full time employee, we have several part time, on-call employees and we recently moved into a larger office space. We are staying ahead of the financial curve and booking jobs with little to no advertising. The future of Honor Movers looks good with plans of expanding the fleet of trucks as well as more full time employees in preparation for next year’s moving season. We have created a strategic plan and are in the process of developing processes and systems to run the business. Honor Movers is working with the CTPTAC in an attempt to gain government contracts.
What Was It Like Working With Your Advisor?:
Working with Matt has been a real eye opener. Matt made me realize that I did not know as much as I should have but he was always there willing to help me get my business off the ground. Matt would highlight the positive steps I was taking and also pointed out things that I should be? doing or that I could be doing better. If Matt did not know the answer or in which direction to go he would tell me so and find the best answer for me.
What Words of Advice Would You Give to Small Businesses Looking to Work with CTSBDC?:
